Preparing children for school from 3 to 5 years in York
Building Confidence for the Next Stage
Our Pre-School provides a stimulating and engaging environment for children aged 3 to 5 years, supporting them as they grow in confidence, independence and readiness for school. At this stage, children are full of ideas, imagination and curiosity, and we provide opportunities for them to explore, create and develop at their own pace.
We focus on helping children become confident learners who feel capable, valued and excited about the world around them. Through a balance of play, structure and gentle guidance, we support each child as they prepare for their transition to school.
Learning Through Exploration, Creativity and Challenge
In Pre-School, learning becomes more purposeful while still being led by play, curiosity and meaningful experiences. Children are encouraged to think independently, solve problems, ask questions and develop their own ideas through a wide range of activities.
At Walmgate Day Nursery, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage through a creative, child-centred approach. Children are supported by experienced practitioners who guide learning through interaction, encouragement and carefully planned experiences.
Through creative play, group activities and everyday experiences, children develop communication, early literacy and mathematical understanding, alongside important social and emotional skills.
What Your Child Will Experience

Supporting School Readiness and Life Skills
Preparing for school is about much more than learning letters and numbers. At Walmgate Day Nursery, we focus on helping children develop the confidence, independence and social skills they need to feel ready for the next stage.
Our practitioners support children as they learn to communicate clearly, build friendships, manage emotions and take part in group activities. These skills form the foundation for a positive and successful transition to school. If you would like to learn more about this stage, you may find our guide on preparing your child for starting school helpful.
Every child approaches this next step differently, and we take care to support each individual journey. By creating a positive and encouraging environment, we help children feel proud of what they can do and ready to take on new challenges as they move towards school.
We also encourage children to take increasing responsibility for themselves, from managing routines to expressing their ideas and making decisions. This helps children feel capable, confident and excited about starting school.
Routine, Independence and Daily Life
Daily routines help children feel secure while also encouraging independence, responsibility and confidence in everyday activities. By providing a consistent structure alongside opportunities for choice and exploration, we support children as they prepare for the expectations of school life.
Settling, Transitions and Confidence
As children prepare for school, they become more aware of routines and transitions. We support children through these changes by creating a structured yet flexible environment where they feel secure and confident.
Our team works closely with parents to ensure each child feels comfortable, supported and ready for the next stage. We focus on building confidence so that children approach new experiences with curiosity and enthusiasm.
Strong relationships with key staff continue to provide reassurance, while also encouraging children to develop independence and resilience.

Meals, Routines and Independence
Mealtimes and daily routines are important opportunities for children to develop independence and social skills. Children are encouraged to make choices, take part in routines and build confidence in everyday tasks.
Meals are freshly prepared on site each day, with a focus on balanced, nutritious options. We support all dietary requirements and encourage positive eating habits in a relaxed and social environment.
Children are also supported to take increasing responsibility during daily routines, from helping to set up activities to managing their own belongings and making simple choices throughout the day. These experiences help build confidence, independence and important life skills that support their transition to school.
