A Room Full of Curiosity and Confidence

Toddler nursery room

Our Toddler Room is a warm, engaging space for children aged 2 to 3 years, designed to support growing confidence, curiosity and independence. At this stage, children are eager to move, explore, communicate and make sense of the world around them, and we create an environment that helps them do just that.

Through a balance of child-led play, thoughtful adult support and meaningful daily routines, we help toddlers feel secure while encouraging them to try new experiences. As a small, family-owned nursery, we take time to understand each child as an individual and support their development in a way that feels personal, responsive and reassuring.

Learning Through Play, Movement and Discovery

Toddlers learn best when they are active, interested and fully involved in what they are doing. In our Toddler Room, we provide a creative, play-based environment where children can explore, investigate and build confidence through everyday experiences.

At Walmgate Day Nursery, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stages through a creative, child-centred approach. Children are supported by experienced practitioners who encourage them to explore, discover and think for themselves, with learning developing naturally through play, curiosity and interaction.

Whether they are building, painting, singing, moving, role playing or exploring outdoors, toddlers are constantly developing communication, physical skills, social confidence and a growing sense of independence.

Creative Play

From painting and sensory activities to music, role play and small-world play, children enjoy creative experiences that encourage imagination and self-expression.

Communication and Language

Through stories, songs, conversation and shared play, toddlers are encouraged to build vocabulary, express themselves and develop confidence in communication.

Outdoor Exploration

Supporting Communication, Confidence and Independence

The toddler years are full of rapid development, and our team is there to support each child as they grow in confidence and capability. We carefully observe every child’s interests and next steps, creating opportunities for learning that feel enjoyable, engaging and achievable.

As toddlers begin to communicate more clearly, build friendships and explore the world with greater confidence, we help them develop important social, emotional and physical skills through play and positive relationships.

We also place a strong emphasis on helping children develop independence in everyday routines. From self-care and turn-taking to making choices and expressing preferences, toddlers are gently encouraged to do more for themselves in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Routine, Reassurance and Daily Care

We work closely with families to make sure each toddler feels settled, supported and confident in their daily nursery routine.

Settling In and Emotional Security

Starting in a new room or nursery setting can be a big step, especially as toddlers become more aware of change and routine. We offer a gentle settling-in process that helps children build familiarity, trust and confidence in their new environment.

Our practitioners work closely with parents to understand each child’s personality, preferences and routines, helping them feel secure and supported from the beginning. Strong key person relationships remain central at this stage, giving toddlers a familiar adult they can turn to for comfort and reassurance.

By creating a calm, consistent and positive environment, we help children settle at their own pace and begin each nursery day with confidence.

Meals, Routines and Everyday Care

Daily routines help toddlers feel secure and give structure to the day. From snack and mealtimes to rest, toileting and transitions between activities, we support children with patience, encouragement and consistency.

Meals are freshly prepared on site each day, with a focus on balanced and nutritious food. We cater for individual dietary requirements and work closely with families to support each child’s needs and preferences.

Mealtimes and routines are also valuable learning opportunities, helping toddlers develop social skills, independence and confidence as part of everyday nursery life.
