New Nursery Spaces Now Available in York: What Parents Need to Know
As children leave for school, now’s the perfect time to secure your nursery place ahead of September funding changes.
Every year, as summer approaches, nurseries across York experience a wave of change — older children move on to school, and new spaces begin to open up. At Walmgate Day Nursery, we’re now entering that exciting window of opportunity where a limited number of nursery and pre-school spaces are becoming available.
Whether you’re looking for care for a baby, toddler, or a child soon to be of pre-school age, this is a perfect time to explore your options — especially with the upcoming September 2025 funding changes on the horizon.
Why Are Nursery Spaces Becoming Available Now?
In the summer term, many of our older pre-schoolers begin preparing for the transition to full-time education. As they leave nursery and head off to Reception, it naturally opens up space in our baby, toddler, and pre-school rooms.
This annual movement creates a short but valuable window for new families — or existing ones — to secure the hours they need. If you’re considering joining us, this is one of the best times to enquire before things fill up again in September.

Get Ahead of the September 2025 Funding Changes
From September 2025, the UK Government is rolling out additional childcare funding support for families — including expanded access to funded hours for children under 3.
But here’s the catch: funding doesn’t guarantee availability. You still need to have your nursery space confirmed in advance.
Whether you’re an existing parent or planning to join Walmgate, now’s the time to:
- Declare your funded hours early
- Secure preferred days and sessions
- Discuss top-up sessions or wraparound care

Already With Us? Don’t Delay Your September Plans
If your child is already attending Walmgate and you’re planning to continue in September with adjusted funding — for example, moving from private to funded hours — it’s essential that you:
- Let us know your intentions as early as possible
- Check your eligibility using the government’s Childcare Choices website
- Reconfirm your sessions with our team
We want to make sure everyone gets the support and schedule that suits their family — but the earlier we know, the better.
What Ages Are We Taking Places For?
We currently have a limited number of places opening across:
- 🌼 Babies – 3 months and up
- 🍃 Toddlers – 2 years old
- 🌻 Pre-School – 3 to 5 years, getting ready for Reception
We offer flexible sessions across the week, including part-time and full-time care. Please note that some days are more popular than others, so early booking is always recommended.
